10th Sunday in Ordinary Time                                  5 June 2005

The call of Matthew: The choice of Matthew as a disciple was a strange one. He was a tax collector, not a popular occupation at the time. However, Jesus works through people and we must be willing to sacrifice ourselves for him. In that way our Sunday Mass should be genuine – an expression of our spiritual sacrifice.

Jesus recalls the words of the prophet Hosea: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice’ The only perfect sacrifice is the one that Christ offered on the Cross as a total offering to the Father’s love and for our salvation.By uniting ourselves with His sacrifice we make our lives a sacrifice to God.
