PARISH OF CLONTIBRET NEWSLETTER

5th March 2006    1st Sunday of Lent

BACK TO OUR ROOTS: Mark’s Gospel account of the temptation of Jesus in the desert is a short one. The “wild beasts” image has a meaning for Mark’s community in Rome at the time. It shows a testing experience but it concludes with hope: “the angels looked after him”. For Christians, Lent is a sojourn in the desert where we can better discover God, free from the bland modern life.

New Offertory Envelopes: Many thanks to all those who helped sort and deliver the envelopes. You will notice that there is no second envelope (Parish Renovations) on the first Sunday of each month. We hope that this will encourage all parishioners to increase their financial support to our priests. In addition, the Easter Dues collection is being re-introduced in order to address this problem. It is the responsibility of the people of the parish to provide a reasonable income for their priests. Their income is derived from the 1st Sunday collections plus Easter Dues, November Dead Lists, Christmas Offerings and the stipends given for Baptisms, Weddings & Funerals. The total sum being divided among the priests of the parish. We appreciate the generosity of so many people and we call on all parishioners with an income to support the priests on the 1st Sunday and the upkeep of the parish on the other Sundays of the month. Envelopes handed into other churches in the diocese do come back to this parish. The Financial Statement for 2005 was distributed with the envelopes and more copies are available in the porches of each church.
