22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 28th August 2005
Today
the Gospel challenges us in a particular way. The Christian life is one
of sacrificial love, abandoning personal ambition to serve Christ. The
important thing though is not the great moments of sacrifice but a life lived
in the constant awareness of the demands of God and the needs of others.

BILLEADY NS (1873-1963): Today we welcome and remember all past students and
teachers of Billeady NS, (Roll No 10645), which was built during the years
1871-73 while Fr Hugh Maguire was Adm. of the parish. The first teachers were
John McAree (Principal) and Ann Boylan, Avelbane (Asst.), who were both appointed
in 1873. Some 92 boys and 61 girls enrolled during the first year. In
Feb 1886 Michael McSkane, Carrickanure became Principal. Records from
intervening years are scant but we know that Mrs Kathleen Daly (nee Magennis,
Cremartin, and daughter of Ann Boylan) was appointed as Principal in 1924,
remaining so until her transfer to Annyalla in 1951. Mrs Kathleen McGinn,
Annyalla then became Principal, with Miss Rita Harden as Asst. Miss Eilish
McKeown succeeded Miss Harden in Jan 1952 and taught in Billeady until Feb 1958
when she was succeeded by Miss Margaret Sammon. From 1951, onwards the policy
of the Dept of Education was to have Billeady, Lackagh, Lisnagrieve and
Annyalla schools amalgamated. In Sept 1960 there were 35 students enrolled in
Billeady. However, it closed its doors for the last time on Friday, 28 June
1963, bringing to an end 90 years of education. The last teachers were Kathleen
McGinn (Principal), who transferred to Lisnagrieve NS and then to Lackagh and
later to Annyalla, and Margaret Sammon (Asst), who transferred to Cornanure NS.
