First Sunday of Advent                                 27 November 2005

WE BEGIN A NEW CHURCH YEAR. The significance of death at the beginning of a new Church Year may not be significantly evident. What is death? An end or a beginning? As Christians, we are pilgrims on a journey; death is our homecoming.

TODAY begins the year of the GOSPEL OF MARK. Of the four Gospels, Mark’s offers the most human portrait of Jesus. In it, Jesus proclaims the “reign of God” and we see Mark’s emphasis on discipleship and the misconceptions which some of the Apostles had of it. It is said that Mark’s Gospel was written for the persecuted Gentile community in Rome around the late 60s AD, although some scholars still argue that it was written in Syria. It is now believed that Mark’s was the first of the Gospels to be written.
