Mission Sunday                                  23rd October 2005

WITNESS TO THE FAITH”:  The Irish Church has produced many missionary martyrs in the 20th century. The late Pope John Paul Ii prayed that the celebration of their lives this Mission Sunday “would draw numerous young men and women to tread the path of heroic fidelity.” You are asked today to be as generous as possible in the Propagation of the Faith collection (World Missions envelope). This collection will be sent in its entirety to the Missions to support current missionaries in their Witness to the Faith.

The Society for the Propagation of the Faith was founded in 1822 by a French laywoman, Pauline Jaricot. She wished to assist all missionaries, especially the poorest. Since 1922, it has become the main organisation of the Church for supporting the activities of missionaries. Pope Pius XI (1922-1939) instituted Mission Sunday in 1926 and ordered that it be observed as a day of prayer and alms-giving for the missions.
