Second Sunday in Ordinary Time                       15th January 2012

'Look, there is the Lamb of God'
We have been called by Christ to become children of God. How we respond is illustrated in today’s Scripture readings. There is a seeking which develops into a search that leads to seeing and believing. (John 1:35)

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY 18-25 JAN 2012.
‘We will all be changed by the victory of Our Lord Jesus Christ’ (1 Cor 15: 51-58).
The theme and materials for this year’s week of prayer have been chosen by the Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant communities in Poland, a country that, like Ireland, knows much about suffering, invasions, losses and gains. This has inspired the writers of the material to focus on what it means to ‘win’ and to ‘lose’, especially given the way that the language of ‘victory’ is often misunderstood in triumphalist terms. Christ shows us a different way!  For all Christians, the best expression of humble service is Jesus Christ, his victory through death and his resurrection. It is in his life, action, teaching, suffering, death and resurrection that we desire to seek inspiration for a modern victorious life of faith which expresses itself in social commitment, in a spirit of humility, service and faithfulness to the Gospel. As we pray for and strive towards the full visible unity of the Church, we too will be changed, transformed and conformed to the likeness of Christ. Unity will require renewal of Church life. Unity will also require us to dispense with comfortable notions of friendliness and co-operation and to replace these with a real sharing of the gifts of the Spirit so that we may truly enter into new life with Christ, which is the only true victory.
There is room for everyone in God’s plan of salvation. Through his death and resurrection, Christ embraces all, irrespective of winning or losing, ‘that whoever believes in him may have eternal life’ (John 3: 15). We are invited therefore to deepen our faith and to pray and reflect on what the victory of Christ means for Christians and our unity with one another.
