Second Sunday of Advent 5th December 2010
"Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is close at hand"
Today and next Sunday the figure of John the Baptist will dominate our Gospel story. We know the story of John not only from the Gospels but also from Jewish history. He was the last of the great prophets of the Old Testament. He looked back to the origins of the Jewish faith. Their meeting with God in the desert had formed the Jewish people and they had become a nation when they crossed the river Jordan to enter the Promised Land. They were a nation ruled by God. John wanted to call his people back to the roots of their faith, back to the desert from which, they will make a new entry into the Promised Land across the waters of the river Jordan. So the two words that dominate his teaching are the Kingdom (or rule) of Heaven and Repentance. At the beginning of the season of Advent John now speaks to us, calling us back to the origins of our Christian faith. Again the two words are Repentance and the Kingdom (or rule) of God.
